Through the success of another Kickstarter campaign, Glass Bottom Games has given us another look at what’s in store for SkateBIRD with some early Alpha gameplay footage. The game has been known of because of its campaign and talented developers, but also because of the quirky themes and unique style of play. It’s sure to be a hit with fans of old and newer skateboarding games that are looking for a animalistic and fictional twist in the genre.
SkateBIRD lets players control different species of birds that can traverse and pull of an array of tricks in environments that seem tiny to a human, but enormous for these little fellows. Even in an open sandbox game like this one there will be some sort of narrative where players’ Big Friend has retired from skateboarding and has moved on to a mundane and miserable life. The solution: showing them the importance of what they love with “the power of being a chill little skateboarding bird.” The more well-know your bird gets, the more heads will turn and the more followers you will accumulate on the birds’ social network, Tweeter. While pulling off some sick tricks, customizable birds will meet friends and other birds who will come check out your own park and help host events.
The devs are making sure that the feel of the skating is smooth and has a “physical-feeling skating with simple buttons, not stick gestures” and imply that lovers of a certain Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater franchise should dig the controls. The challenges that will be presented, events that can be organized, or simple fun that can be had with friends should reach fans of the genre looking for something new from a great independent studio.
SkateBIRD has no set release date and its Steam page lists it as “Coming Soon-ish.” Although certain Pledge milestones on its Kickstarter site show that the digital copy of the game and any extras are estimated to arrive by June of 2020.
