Journey developer thatgamecompany has revealed their newest upcoming project: Sky, a mobile multiplayer “social adventure game.” The game was announced yesterday at Apple’s latest iPhone launch event, as the game is going to be released for all Apple platforms – Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad. In a follow-up post to the company blog, thatgamecompany published Sky’s first teaser trailer and a few initial details about the game.
Sky is going to feature multiplayer support for up to eight players at a time, from anywhere around the world. The game will be a departure from the developer’s previous single-player games like Flower; even Journey, which does allow player interaction, makes for a more solitary experience than the gameplay of Sky. In their post, thatgamecompany wrote, “It’s hard to explain the game, but a good place [to start] would be to say that Sky is a game specially created to be played, and shared, among loved ones and family. If you can imagine the delight of visiting a theme park where lasting memories are made, we envision Sky will sometimes feel like that.”
In Sky, players work in teams to explore floating islands, spread light, and summon spirits. Before it was announced, thatgamecompany teased that it was a “game about giving.” In an interview attached to Sky’s announcement post, Creative Director Jenova Chen said, “We’ve been working on a game that is more on the emotional side of the spectrum, and through each game, we want to explore a new type of experience…with Sky, I had some inspiration [in] the feeling that we are all connected. I think true happiness comes from a person who is genuinely wanting to help others.”
The full interview with Jenova Chen can be seen below. For now, the Sky is “coming soon” to iOS devices; future updates will be posted to Sky‘s web page.
