Nintendo has announced a crossover-of-sorts between two Nintendo Switch titles: Tetris 99 and Splatoon 2. Tetris 99, which puts a battle royale spin on the classic Tetris, will have its fifth Maximus Cup competition, which will take place from July 12 until 11:59 PM PT on July 15. The event will be Splatoon-themed to commemorate the final Splatfest in Splatoon 2, coming later this month.
During the Maximus Cup, players accumulate points by participating. How high the players place determines how many points they get for each mach. The top 999 players at the end of the Maximus Cup will receive 999 My Nintendo Gold Points, which can be redeemed on the My Nintendo website for digital prizes. For this particular Maximus Cup, players who accumulate at least 100 points from participating will unlock a Splatoon 2 theme in Tetris 99.
Splatoon 2’s final Splatfest will take place from July 18 to 21. Splatfests have been a core element of the Splatoon franchise since the original game’s debut. During Splatfests, the regular online modes for Splatoon 2 are disabled, as players are encouraged to participate in the massive in-game competition. Each Splatfest has a different theme prompting players to pick a side, which will be the team they compete for. The theme for the final Splatfest is Chaos vs. Order. Per usual, two prominent characters from the game, Pearl and Marina, will each pick a side, which may sway players to pick one way or another depending on their preference between the two characters. The winning team is chosen not only by number of victories, but also by which side was picked more by players. Now that Nintendo is discontinuing Splatfests for Splatoon 2, the company could be moving toward a Splatoon 3.
Tetris 99 is currently available for free to everyone who has a Nintendo Switch Online membership. The Tetris Company recently announced they would be teaming up with developer N3TWORK to release another battle royale-style title, Tetris Royale. Though there is no set release date yet, a beta for the game is expected to release sometime this year.
