A couple of days ago, Tencent announced a new console called the Tencent Games Platform Box. The pricing of the box has not been released, however the basic specs of it have/ The box would run on Windows 10 and would have a sixth-generation Intel core processor to power it. Within the platform box there is a Box Mode that allows the user to download and stream games. The console would be able to run multiple games such as League of Legends, FIFA Online 13, NBA 2k Online, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit Tournament, and many other games that Tencent helped bring to Asia. It is also expected to be able to play a bunch of third party games that would be announced later this year.
The new console so far will only be released in Asia, and is unknown on if it would spread to the West. However, Tencent is heavily based in Aisa and with China just recently removing their ban on consoles, they have a whole group of people to purchase their consoles over the other ones. Tencent has made its name in a lot of other things than just gaming, but with their recent purchases in League of Legends, and Gears of War over the past couple of years has kept its name associated with some games.
From this news, it seems that Tencent is trying to expand on what they are capable of. Instead of just making games, they would now be able to make the consoles that could run the games. From this they would be able to control a lot more of the gaming market especially in the untapped gaming market in China.
