Launching July 22nd will be the fifth episode of six in Telltale Games’ Game of Thrones adventure series. Debuting very recently was the trailer, take a look.
If you’re unfamiliar with the series or shy away from adventure games in general, there’s never been a better time to change your mind. A few years back with their series The Walking Dead, Telltale Games reimagined the point and click adventure model for the modern gamer, and they’ve really sprinted forward at full speed with it. Game of Thrones is no exception. The games use a third person camera attached to the controlled character that allows players to explore 3D environments and interact with the various people and objects through that perspective. It’s a major leap from the classic cursor pecking and static images.
Centerpiece in these games is the dialog. This is where the Telltale teams really strut their stuff and flex their writing muscles. Their games are critically acclaimed for their branching dialog, time-constrained decisions, and fully-interactive storytelling. Everything the player does has a lasting impact on the world their exploring. During dialog exchanges, all choices have a time limit in which to be made, and boy can it be brief. A common complaint is that, oftentimes, players will hardly be able to read the dialog options in the allotted time, let alone weigh the pros and cons of each one. In that way, however, the games become that much more immersive and realistic. A real conversation wouldn’t leave you with time to gauge the impact of every spoken word without appearing insane or uninterested. Nearly every dialog choice will prompt the game to display a message along the lines of “<Character name> will remember that,” further hammering home the significance of each interaction and providing clear evidence that their decision will have an effect of some kind.
Fans of the Game of Thrones series, be they of the novels, the HBO television show, previous Telltale games, or the various other miscellaneous media using the franchise, will certainly have their appetite satiated with the Telltale series. It’s got all the biting drama, conflicting loyalties, and scandalous liars that make the novels and TV show so popular, and it’s all interactive and responds to the player, meaning it tells the story you decide it will tell.
For fans of the HBO series, all the actors and actresses you’re familiar with from the show provide the voices for their digital counterparts. You can see the comprehensive cast list here. Within you’ll find names such as Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Natalie Dormer (Margaery Tyrell), Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), and Kit Harington (Jon Snow) to name only a few, and you can take heart in the fact that they all clearly take their role in the game as seriously as they do the show.
The plot of the Telltale series begins and somewhat coincides with the end of season 3 and most of season 4. That was the first episode, however, and while the story resembles its serialized counterpart, it is its own story in many ways, and offers players an outlet to get more of what they love of the novels and show while they wait for Mr. Martin to finally finish Winds of Winter.
Telltale’s Episode 5 launches July 21st for PS3/4, PC and Mac, July 22nd for Xbox One/360, and July 23rd for iOS and Android.
