Earlier today, Telltale did a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) for their current season of The Walking Dead game, The Walking Dead: A New Frontier, the third episode of which was released earlier this week. Before anything else, let me get this out of the way: This article contains SPOILERS for seasons one and two of The Walking Dead game, as well as episodes one, two and three of The Walking Dead: A New Frontier.
After dealing with a lot of fan complaints and critiques, the Telltale team began answering questions about the future of the game. One fan asked if there would be any more flashbacks with Kenny or Jane, the two characters players could have ended season two with, but who both die in flashback sequences in A New Frontier, regardless of who the player ended up with. To this, Telltale responded, “It is highly likely that you’ll be seeing more of Kenny and Jane before the end of the season.” When asked about a possible romantic entanglement between series mainstay Clementine and series newcomer Gabe, Telltale stated, “That sounds like a choice for Clem and Gabe to decide for themselves.” It’ll be interesting to see if the player’s in-game decisions affect this possibility or if it will happen (or not happen) regardless of what the player does, making it truly a decision between Clementine and Gabe and not the player.
A wrench was thrown into the machine when a player asked about Clementine’s ethnicity, hoping to confirm that she is African-American. To this, Telltale responded that Clementine’s mother is African-American but that we don’t know about her biological father, since he has yet to be seen in the games. This was a shocking moment since many players had assumed that the man in the family picture found in the first episode of season one was Clementine’s father, but it would seem from Telltale’s response that he is actually Clem’s stepfather and that we know nothing about the fate of her biological father. This presents interesting lore possibilities, to say the least.
Of course, it was inevitable that someone would ask when the next episode is coming out, despite the fact that an episode just came out a few days ago. Telltale answered that they plan to have episode four out in April and ideally want episode five, the season finale, to be out in May. They confirmed that regardless of how well things go according to plan, “the wait for 4 and 5 will be much shorter than the wait for ep 3,” which came out three months after the previous episode. Apparently, episode four was pitched to the Telltale team as “the episode where players think about who their family really is.”
