Another slip of the tongue, another game announcement. Earlier today Sega officially announced their new game, Team Sonic Racing which is due to release on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch in Winter 2018. The game was leaked yesterday by Walmart, spoiling another video game announcement during the E3 hype.
You can check out the announcement trailer here:
According to the listing on the website, there will be online multiplayer with up to 12 players per race in addition to 4-player split screen and multiple offline/online modes. The races will consist of teams as players will have to work together to win the race. This includes knocking opponents out of the race and unleashing a ‘Team Ultimate’. You and your team can also collect items during the race called Wisps, which boosts your offense and defense. The game will consist of 15 playable characters across the Sonic Series, and each one will have one of three unique traits; speed, technique, and power.
Despite Walmart stealing the thunder from Sega, the announcement didn’t come as a huge shocker. The game’s developer, Sumo Digital, was teasing the games announcement for some time and even released teaser trailer back in March. The first known Sonic racing game, Sonic R, was a little underwhelming to say the least when it was released in 1997. Although the game at the time received generally positive reviews, the feeling was not the same with fans.
Sega stayed away from the racing scene for a while, until they decided to give it another go with Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing in 2010. The series found a fanbase and Sega released its sequel Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed two years later in 2012. Both games were developed by Sumo Digital, so it’s easy to see why Sega still entrusts them with the Sonic Racing series.
Team Sonic Racing is slated for release in Winter 2018.
