With the reveal of the PS5 Pro, heads have turned to Nintendo for their announcement of the Switch 2. Nintendo have stated in the past that they won’t be releasing the Switch 2 before the end of the fiscal year (April 2025), but according rumors reported by Taiwan’s Economic Daily, Nintendo, “…is about to launch the new Switch 2 in advance by the end of this year, so as to advance the business opportunities of the European and American Christmas season and further seize the business opportunities in the global home game console market”.
Tech details and specs have also begun to come from the Taiwanese source, reporting the system will likely be enlarged again and have a dual-screen design. They also state that the system will have an improved battery as well as have better screen processing and performance improvements. We have also seen reports that the Joy-Con controllers will be magnetic. However, these details are currently unconfirmed.
The PS5 Pro is set to release at around $699, which sees its price increase 40% from the original $499 price tag upon the initial release of the PlayStation 5. The current estimated price of the Switch 2 is around $400 and lines up with the increase of around $50 from system to system since the release of the Wii in 2006.
When asked if $499 is too much for a Switch successor in a poll on Nintendo Life, 20% said they would pay the amount while 30% said they thought it was a bit too high, and the remaining 50% said they would “wait and see”.
The Nintendo Switch sits 3rd all time for most sold console, selling 143.42 million units since its release in 2017 and saw a spike in sales in 2021 after the release of the OLED model. Since then however, there has be steady, but understandable decline in sales of the hardware, with their software relatively maintaining sales.
