It’s been a while since we last heard anything concrete in regard to Nightdive Studio’s System Shock Remake. The game has been in development for the better part of seven years, but it looks like the light at the end of the tunnel is coming much sooner than we thought. The studio has announced that System Shock Remake will be releasing sometime in March 2023, and has an official Steam page to boot. The game will also be coming to several other platforms, making it much more accessible than ever before.
As we already mentioned, the System Shock Remake has been in the works since it was initially revealed in late 2015, not too long after Nightdive released System Shock Enhanced Edition. That iteration was more or less a port of the original 1994 title, allowing players with modern systems to finally play the title that started the franchise. The remake is a complete rebuild, making it as if it’s a brand new title for the current video game market. The title had suffered through several delays, in 2018, 2021, and 2022.
The name System Shock is synonymous within the video game community. While the original title had a lasting impact, it was the sequel, System Shock 2, that launched the series into mainstream stardom. Ironically, and despite being critically acclaimed, the title did not meet sales expectations when it was released in 1999. This more or less resulted in the series being shelved while System Shock 2 developer Ken Levine went on to create Bioshock, a spiritual successor to his previous project.
When Nightdive obtained the rights to the name and re-released the title in 2013 for, at the time, modern operating systems. This reintroduced the series to a whole new audience and gave it some new life. From there they went on to work on the System Shock Remake, which will finally see a release in March 2023.
