Sword of the Sea Wins Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media at The 68th Annual Grammy Awards

Today at the 68th annual Grammy Awards Composer Austin Wintory won the Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media for his work on Giant Squid’s recent release Sword of the Sea. This was just the fourth year of the award since its inception in 2023 following splitting off video games from the Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media. Sword of the Sea was up against against a slew of other games this year including Helldivers 2 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle as well as the DLC for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Star Wars Outlaws after their respective base games were nominated in the category last year.

This was the third time Wintory was nominated for the award. He was up for the inaugural award for his work on Aliens: Fireteam Elite in 2023 as well as being nominated the following year for his work on Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical alongside fellow composers Jesse Serro and Tripod. Overall, this was Wintory’s fourth nomination at The Grammys as he was nominated back at the 55th annual award show in 2013 in the Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for his work as composer on thatgamecompany’s Journey. Back then, he was pitted against titans of the industry such as Hans Zimmer, John Williams, and winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Wintory alongside Journey hold the distinction as the only video game and video game soundtrack ever nominated for that award in its history.

Zachary Dalton: I have a major passion for video games, the stories they tell, and writing about them. Avid believer that video games present the best storytelling opportunities out of any media, and that needs to be conveyed. Former competitive Pokemon player. Attended university to study game development. Wouldn't be who I am today without games.
