The developers behind Until Dawn, Supermassive Games, has filed a trademark for House Of Ashes. While we can assume this is the next entry in The Dark Pictures Anthology series after Man Of Medan, this has not been officially confirmed. It would certainly be odd to build up the fact that they are developing an anthology series and immediately move off into a standalone title similar to Until Dawn. Since the trademark was filed, it shouldn’t be too long until Supermassive Games decides to mention what it means, it’ll likely be revealed after Man Of Medan releases.
For those who aren’t familiar with Man Of Medan, it’s a supernatural horror game in the same vein as Until Dawn that circles around the decisions players make. There are many differences between Man Of Medan and Until Dawn but the most notable difference is the setting. While Until Dawn takes place primarily in a remote cabin in the mountains, Man Of Medan takes place in a “ghost-ship adrift in the South Pacific”. Until Dawn also has a focus on its “Butterfly Effect” while Man Of Medan seems to have a focus on its “Moral Compass”, both of these are ways of showing actions that’ll have consequences later in the game, potentially even affecting the ending.
There isn’t any way of knowing what House Of Ashes is going to be, but assumptions can be made that it’ll very likely be another supernatural horror game with a focus on player choices with consequences. If they’re continuing the theme of different settings, it isn’t too much of an offshoot to think this could potentially be a haunted house or haunted mansion, likely one whose occupants passed away in a fire. Knowing Supermassive Games though, they’d likely bring an interesting take to whatever House Of Ashes is going to be.
The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan is set to release this year for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
