A new listing for a Challenger Pack 4 for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has appeared on the Nintendo’s UK wesbsite that gives an interesting clue as to what’s next for Nintendo’s beloved brawler. Everything about the listing looks pretty typical, but SNK’s copyright appears at the very bottom, which is a strong indicator that the next DLC character hitting the roster will come from one of their franchises. There is also a date of February 29, 2020 for the fourth challenger pack, but it may be a placeholder. DLC character 3, Banjo-Kazooie, has still not received an official release date.

SNK is known widely for their fighting game franchises, and a Challenger for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate could come from one of their major series. Some possibilities are Terry Bogard, one of the most recognizable SNK characters from the King of Fighters and Fatal Fury games. SNK is working on developing the fifteenth installment of King of Fighters, which is something to keep in mind. A port of Samurai Shodown is set to release for the Nintendo Switch in Japan on December 12, and a character from that series might make their way into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate next year. It may not be the iconic samurai Haohmaru, as he is busy appearing as a crossover guest character in the second season of Soul Calibur VI.
Other SNK games might see a challenger character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with another possibility being a crossover from the Metal Slug series. With Ken and Ryu already appearing from Capcom’s Street Fighter series, it just feels right to add more SNK pugilists to the roster. After all, it’s said that Smash is a fighting game.
Other rumors have circulated that upcoming roster slots would go to from the Ninja Gaiden series, or possibly to D.Va or Tracer from Blizzard’s team shooter Overwatch. A recent Amazon listing for an official Overwatch-themed Nintendo Switch case has led many to believe that a port is on its way to the hybrid handheld-console soon.
