With the recent release of the Sora amiibo, development for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has seemingly come to an end. That’s according to series creator Masahiro Sakurai in a recent X/Twitter post, celebrating the figurine’s release according to the translation by Siliconera.
“Sora’s amiibo comes out today!” wrote Sakurai. “Thank you to everyone who worked on it (this was an amazing accomplishment). The design was always perfect, and the details and the colors look exactly as intended. The pose and sculpting look good as well. Now that all of the fighters have an amiibo, my work on Super Smash Bros Ultimate is basically done. Thank you for everything.”

Sora debuted as the final DLC character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s second DLC Fighter Pass in 2021, and is the last of the game’s 89 roster to get an amiibo figurine. Amiibos for the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was revealed leading up to its release date in 2018 adding in characters like Inkling and Ridley to the collection following Super Smash Bros 3DS and WiiU.
Additionally, days before the Sora amiibo’s release Super Smash Bros. Ultimate received what’s likely to be its final update, Version 13.0.2. According to its patch notes, this update was mainly for compatibility with the new amiibo and no other additional fixes.
With development for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate seemingly over, fans are eager to know where the series goes next. And with Sakurai looking to move away from his YouTube channel later this year to focus back on game development, it wouldn’t be surprising if another Smash Bros game releases in the future. Until then, Nintendo fans can still enjoy the massive amount of content offered in the game
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch. Fans can purchase the game physically and digitally. Digital releases are available on the Nintendo eShop and the official Nintendo website.
