Super Mario Run Getting Major Update Next Week

Both the iOS and Android versions of Super Mario Run are scheduled to get a major (and free!) update on September 29th. This update comes packed with content and updates to Mario’s first mobile game. So let’s take a look at what’s included.

A New Mode – Remix 10 is a completely new challenge, which “remixes” 10 sections of old levels together with rainbow metals scattered about. The beauty of this mode is that it will remix differently each time leaving each playthrough feeling fresh. There’s no failing in this mode either, which is great for me, but playing well does reward pretty cool items for your Mushroom Kingdom. Complete this mode entirely and you’ll be rewarded the grand prize of Princess Daisy, who is subsequently playable the rest of the game. Spoiler Alert: She can do a double jump.

A Whole New World – No, not Aladdin (but good luck getting that song out of your head). I’m talking about World Star. This new world consists of 9 new levels, featuring tons of new enemies, more gameplay mechanics and so many more coins to collect. The only kicker is, World Star isn’t unlocked at the start. You’ll first have to completely finish worlds 1 through 6.

Your Own Music – You can now play whatever music you’d like while playing Super Mario Run. Yes, that means you can definitely listen to “A Whole New World” as you progress through the levels of World Star. Also, any time you listen to your own tunes, whatever character you’re playing as will be wearing cool headphones. If that’s not cute, I don’t know what is.

Discount! As soon as the update is available Super Mario Run will be 50% off for 2 weeks. Sure, it’s still not the free-to-play game that critics and investors were hoping for last year, but it’s hard to debate all this amazing content and fun on-the-go gameplay for just $5. If you don’t own it yet, now’s the time.

Some of my favorite games along the way have been Zelda BoTW, Counter-Strike, Metroid Prime, Braid, Mega Man 3 and Turtles in Time for the SNES. In 2011 I graduated from UMass Boston with a degree in English, but have worked mainly in tech in San Francisco, including a job at a large free-to-play company where I worked in live-operations and community management.
