Super Mario Run Coming to iPhone and iPad

This morning during Apple’s Event a special guest named of Shigeru Miyamoto took the stage where he announced that there would be a new game coming to the app store; Super Mario Run. The game will feature Mario running through the map requiring players to tap their screen to avoid obstacles and collect coins.

As players progress through the levels there will be unique power ups that will change the game mechanics, the ultimate goal for everyone being to reach the iconic flagpole. While on Stage at the event, Miyamoto had this to say about Mario coming to IOS:

For the past 30 years every time Mario has encountered a new platform he has evolved and continued running towards a new goal. Now Mario is running towards his next goal: iPhone… We want as many people as possible all around the World be able to enjoy playing as Mario and they’ll be doing it in a brand new game: Super Mario Run.

Along with the usual Mario antics, the app will feature a new game mode “Toad Rally”. Players will pick an opponent to compete against as well as beat their high score. Battle mode not only allows people to compete against their friends, but also allow them to compete with anyone around the world. Players will need to traverse a level collecting coins until the time runs out. There won’t be a flag to reach but players will receive extra points for doing “daring moves” to impress Toads.

Later, after the Apple keynote, Miyamoto published a press release where he said, “We have created Super Mario Run to be perfect for playing on your iPhone. For the first time ever, players will be able to enjoy a full-fledged Super Mario game with just one hand, giving them the freedom to play while riding the subway or my favorite, eating a hamburger”.

The app store currently has a description for the game with the option for people to receive a notification when the app becomes available.

In this game, you constantly move forward through the courses while using a variety of jumps to navigate. Your character will behave differently depending on the timing of your taps, so it’s up to you to show off particularly smooth moves, gather coins, and reach the goal.

According to the app store there will be three different game modes.

Super Mario Run offers three different game modes. The first mode features challenging courses for you to complete. In the second mode, you challenge the play data of other people’s completed courses. You compete to see who can finish the course with the most style! In the third mode, you can create your own Mushroom Kingdom using coins collected by playing the first two game modes.

Miyamoto didn’t specify a release date but did say that Super Mario Run would be coming out before the holidays. there was no mention of a price for the app, only that it would be announced “at a later date”.
