Nintendo has created a variety of games showcasing Mario and his adventurous exploits, and recently the company proved their newest game will be an up-and-coming title for release this fall.
Gamescom 2017 has ended, but not without Super Mario Odyssey taking home a number of awards and achievements for Nintendo. On Gamescom’s official site they’ve announced the award winners, in which Super Mario Odyssey claimed multiple spots:
- Best of Gamescom
- Best Console Game Nintendo Switch
- Best Action Game
- Best Family Game
- Best strategy Game
- Gamescom “Most Wanted” Consumer Award
In addition to the many awards received at the event, new gameplay footage was released featuring levels full of colorful, food-based themes, playing into the game’s whimsical but adventurous style. His signature red hat has also changed to become “Cappy,” a creature that allows Mario to harness a number of new skills to help him through his journey. Some of Mario’s new abilities allow him to swim through Lava, gain coins from food items and change into a giant dinosaur.
In an interview with The Verge, Super Mario Odyssey producer Yoshiaki Koizumi has also weighed in on some of these new features and why he believes they should be a part of the game:
“But just within the general theme of surprise within the game, having a T-rex appear doesn’t feel out of place.
Rather than just trying to create a real version of Yoshi, for example, having an actual Tyrannosaurus Rex in the game and specifically calling it a T-rex was an attempt to strengthen that sense that there are unfamiliar elements in this Mario game.”
Although all Mario fans didn’t get hands-on experience with the game themselves at Gamescom, Nintendo will be at the upcoming PAX West event, bringing Super Mario Odyssey, Metroid: Samus Returns and more for people to play. Nintendo hasn’t announced if the levels available to play at PAX West will be the same ones featured in their showcase at E3, but fans should expect to see features in Super Mario Odyssey that are completely new to the franchise’s style overall.
Super Mario Odyssey is set for release October 27, 2017 on the Nintendo Switch.
