Back during Super Mario Maker 2’s Treehouse live segment, Takashi Tezuka of Nintendo promised that the Super Mario Maker 2 team was working on allowing for friends to be able to play together. The new update, Version 1.1.0 fulfills that promise and allows for online play in either Multiplayer Versus or Multiplayer Co-op. Nintendo of America released a tweet yesterday about the update showing that the new update allows for players to connect with their friends by using the Nintendo Switch’s VIP list.
This is a marked change from when the game released. Initially players could only play with random players online because as Nintendo stated, “with global leaderboards, the matchmaking for competitive play would be compromised if you could play with friends.” Multiplayer Co-op mode challenges friends to work together in order to complete a level, while Multiplayer Versus pits two friends against each other in a race to see who can finish the level first. These modes can only be played locally and not online.
According to IGN, the first new feature is called ‘Play With Friends’ which allows players to and allows players to connect with to utilize the touch-screen and button controls when making courses in Handheld mode. The second new feature is “LAN Play, which adds a registry of Official Makers in the Leaderboards section that will include new courses as well as, “special ones created for collaborations or special events.” The last new feature added is that players using the “Play With Friends” option will allow players to choose courses from the Course World as well as courses saved to the Coursebot. The update is out now for Nintendo Switch.
