Independent filmakers Bram Ruiter and Daniel Oliveira Carneir have released the second and third episodes of their film series Super Game Jam on Steam. The series, which is the product of a partnership with indie game publisher Devolver Digital, travels to different locations around the world and pairs two game developers together in order to follow them during a 48 hour development marathon based around a prompt supplied by their peers.
Episode 2 takes place in Berlin, Germany and follows the story of Dominik Johann, best known for Impetus, and Christoffer Hedborg of Shelter and Pid fame. The end product of their efforts, known as gameBlossom, is based around the theme of “gardening,” although little other information on it is readily available at present.
Episode 3 follows Adam Drucker of Samurai Gunn and Sos Sosowski of McPixel in the city of Oakland, California. Their game, Catch of Death, is a fast-paced multiplayer action game based on the prompt of “family.”
Episode 1, which is already available, stars Jan Willem Nijman, known for Ridiculous Fishing, as well as Richard Boeser, developer of Ibb and Obb, in Utrecht, Netherlands as they develop a game around the theme of “breakup.” Two more episodes are slated for the release in the coming months, the first of which follows Jonatan Söderström (Hotline Miami) and Martin Jonasson (Rymdkapsel) of Gothenburg, Sweden while the latter tells the tale of Tom Francis (Gunpoint) + Liselore Goedhart (Remembering) in London, England.
The Steam release of Super Game Jam includes all five films upon their respective release dates as well as copies of the prototype games developed in each of them. These games, however, are mostly unfinished and “not prepared for standalone commercial releases,” according to the information provided on the Steam store. The Super Game Jam collection is available for $20 but will be on sale for $16 until July 28, 2014. The game package is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux PCs, however Steam and the developers will be providing minimal technical support and no guarantees of functionality for any specific hardware and software configurations. The entire Super Game Jam film series will be released by September 2014.
