Pokémon Sun and Moon’s debut two weeks ago marked one of the biggest releases this year. Although it’s only been on the market for a short while, players of Sun and Moon have been asked to the participate in a worldwide challenge: Between now and Dec. 13th, Pokémon players worldwide who undertake this challenge are tasked to collect a total of 100 million Pokémon.
According to Digital Spy, players using Sun and Moon’s online service, Global Link, will be able to participate by registering their contributions. To do this before the challenge deadline, players will need to log into their account Game Sync function to sync their count onto the database. The 100 million total in not an individual mark, but a collective total of the entire Sun and Moon gaming community. If players are able to succeed in passing the challenge, they will receive a reward of 1,000 festival coins per participant. These coins can then be used to buy items and facilities in the Festival Plaza, which is the online multiplayer hub of Pokémon Sun and Moon. You won’t get the title of World’s Best Trainer, but it’s a pretty sweet prize to receive if you’re already going to be catching Pokémon.
However, if players are unable to meet the 100 million mark, they won’t walk away empty-handed. The Pokémon Company has stated that they will still offer all participants 100 coins as a commiseration prize. In other words: even if you don’t win as a collective team, it’s still worth it to simply log in and sync your account while catching a couple of Pokémon.
Pokémon Sun and Moon became Nintendo’s best pre-selling games of all time. In the first week on the market, the demo received more than 3.5 million downloads. So if the player base of Sun and Moon runs deep into the millions, players shouldn’t have a problem meeting this challenge.
This will only be the first challenge in what The Pokémon Company promises to be a series of large-scale online competitions. These competitions are available to all trainers to participate in, but they are also recommended for those players who have made it the post-game and may want a more competitive incentive to keep playing the game.
