During Summer Games Fest, we got to go hands on with Gunfire Games upcoming game Remnant II. We got to spend around 30 minutes with the game, and, as they dubbed it, it really did feel like a “Shooter Souls” game. Thus, if you enjoy the first game or the Soulslike genre, you’ll find something to enjoy here. The game can be played by yourself or co-op with up to three players. For the demo, we got to a bit of both single player and two player co-op.
We got to choose between a few different classes each with their own type of weapon. The developers said that the classes will have more of an impact overall than they did during the first game with each having unique abilities and perks. I choose the Handler which had an AR along with having a dog companion. My teammate choose the more tanky Challenger class. Co-op was super easy to join as one player can join the same area as the host player, then the host player just has to interact with the checkpoint and then both players will enter the same world.
The gameplay felt smooth, and we didn’t have any issues with lag or anything when playing co-op. You can easily revive your teammate if you have a healing item. With the Handler, you can even send your dog companion to heal your teammate as you keep enemies distracted.
Combat didn’t feel too challenging either when playing co-op or by yourself. Most little enemies can be taken out easily with your heavy weapons, and the bigger enemies just feel a bit tankier than the smaller ones. Thus, the game isn’t too challenging for people who are more averse to the Soulslike genre.
Overall, Remenant II was an enjoyable experience. The game is set to release next month on July 25, 2023.
