Sonic Racing is back, but this time having multiversal consequences Sonic Racing: Crossworlds. At Summer Games Fest, we got to go hands-on with the game and play a few of the different Grand Prix options in the game. With some of the big names in the genre also releasing recently (cough cough Mario Kart), Sega is looking to compete on that level against them, and it sure shows.
The game itself gives you so much customization options for your karts. You can make karts have focus on things such as speed, acceleration, or drifting with the pieces you add to the kart. With the gadget system, you are given even more options that give you an insane plethora of how your racing goes. It’s seriously like you’re making your own RPG character build with what you can do in this game.
As for the actual racing, the tracks are absolutely gorgeous with how much is happening while you drive around. The Grand Prix gives you a rival to compete with who you also want to beat while also trying to come in first place overall. As you compete, once you complete the race, you can move to the next race or are able to spend tickets you have accumulated to retry the race and try for a better placement. Then, as the finale to the Grand Prix you race through all the previous tracks you have gone trough. This specific race gives extra points for your placements so vying for first is huge here as you can have a massive swing like I went from fifth to placement to first after winning that final race. This would’ve been impossible for me had I not gotten the extra points.
Then, there a huge amount of characters in the game. We had a wide selection to choose from, but there were so many that we couldn’t see. Plus, there will be post launch characters from other franchises such as Like a Dragon, Persona 5, and even Minecraft.
Sonic Racing: Crossworlds is set to release later this year on September 25, 2025.
