Another game we got to see while visiting the Blumhouse Games booth at Summer Games Fest was Crisol: Theater of Idols from Vermila Games. This one was far more horror right from the get go compared to the other game we saw. Described as a mix between Bioshock and the modern Resident Evil games, Crisol: Theater of Idols felt scary as soon as we started the game.
The inspirations were apparent from the moment you start the game. The game has an inventory system much like Resident Evil and the eerie vibes of the world and enemy help make the game stand out. Plus, the unique thing about Crisol: Theater of Idols is that your weapon uses your blood as ammo. Thus, when you need ammo, you must drain your own health to refill it. This is a game where making every bullet count goes to the extreme.
As we traversed the city streets and abandoned storefronts of this horrifying version of Madrid, Spain, we found our way to a winch stuck in place with a steel chain. Interacting with the chain indicated that the chain needed to be cut. Choosing that sprung us to our inventory, where thankfully we possessed a pair of bolt cutters. We chose the bolt cutters and the chains were cut. The winch now free, we were able to turn the crank to open the drawbridge to the next area. As our character started to even barely turn the wheel, a giant sound emitted from behind us and an enormous patchwork marionette monster loomed above us. It picked us up and threw us twenty feed back or so.
Like the other monsters of Crisol: Theater of Idols, it looked liked a composite of numerous creepy, antique dolls. Only this one had part of the bottom of the doll’s chin broken off, and a hideous lower portion of something’s face was underneath roaring. The character bellowed how he should run, and we tried to oblige, taking shots at the composite monster as we fled. Unfortunately, through clumsiness or uncertainty of how to flee properly, the monster kept catching us and biting us in half. We tried about seven times to get away, but we kept getting stuck in the moment the monster arrived turning into a wall and getting instantly killed.
Crisol: Theater of Idols currently has no release window, so fans may have to wait a while to get their hands on this game.
