Summer Games Fest 2023: FOAMSTARS Preview

Summer Games Fest showcased a lot of new and revealed games this year. Today we got to go hands on with the recently revealed FOAMSTARS from Square Enix. While it doesn’t have the squid kid aesthetic of Splatoon, it’s definitely trying to go up against it in a genre where there’s really only one defining game.

Despite many people’s apprehension about the game when it was revealed at the PlayStation Showcase a few weeks back, FOAMSTARS is surprisingly fun.The gameplay, much like Splatoon, is to coat the level with, in this case, foam to traverse around and knock out the other team. With the foam though, you can build it up to build things like walls or towers to block enemies.

We got to play a few rounds of the Star mode. In this mode, it’s a 4v4 battle where your goal is to eliminate your opponents seven times then eliminate their star player and win the match. The way to eliminate your opponents is to coat them in foam and then surf into them to knock them out before one of their teammates can free them. Once that happens, that team’s best player becomes their Star Player and gets buffed with more health and abilities. Thus, it become much harder to get that final elimination.

Being a 4v4 multiplayer game, there are eight different characters for you to choose from. Each character has two skills as well as a more powerful Super Star skill to use to your advantage. They also each have their own unique weapons, though there are two different variations of the shotgun that different characters use. We even ended up having a match where all eight of us randomly ended up choosing each one of the eight characters, so we got to see everything in action all at once.

FOAMSTARS is set to come to PlayStation consoles later this year.
