Summer Games Fest is currently ongoing with tons of things to see. Today, we sat down at the Disney booth to play with Mickey Mouse and his friends in Disney Illusion Island. We played part of the game in 2 player co-op, and the game ended up being a lot of fun as a multiplayer metroidvania style platformer.
The game has absolutely no combat in Disney Illusion Island so your goal is to avoid and jump over enemies as you explore a pretty expansive map. Though there is no combat, there are still bosses to find around the map. We ended up fighting one of the bosses and we had to solve the puzzle presented to us to drop something that would hit the boss. Overall, the game feels like a really good family game and a nice, easy entry point into the metroidvania genre.
The art style feels like a modern take on the classic Disney style. You can choose between Mickie Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck or Goofy, and each character is delightfully animated and designed. The characters are full of character with each one having their own unique things about them such as Donald using a plunger to get up a wall or Mickie having a rocket pack to perform a double jump.
As aforementioned, the game has a cozy, family friendly vibe. Before starting you can choose a difficulty level. You can also help each other get to new areas. However, nothing personifies the family friendly vibe more than the hug mechanic. When both players hit the Y button, the characters hug and both gain an additional heart.
Disney Illusion Island is set to release on Nintendo Switch next month on July 28.
