Yesterday during Summer Games Fest, we got to go hands on with Cyberpunk 2077‘s new and upcoming expansion Phantom Liberty. The demo lasted around 45 minutes, and there was a lot to see in that time. If you’re a fan of the base game, you’re sure to enjoy jumping back into Night City to see all the new content in the game.
We got to choose between two different character builds with one being more straightforward shooting and melee and one being more hacking focused. Luckily, I got to experience a bit of both due to having a bit extra time. Like my main game playthrough, I enjoyed the stealth approach being able to hack the enemies and sneak by. However, there’s plenty to enjoy in whatever build you make, and there’s even a new skill tree that can be used by any playstyle you’re comfortable with.
In the demo, V is tasked with saving the president of the New United States when her “Spacecracft One” ship is brought down in the most dangerous part of Night City. You meet President Myers and her right hand Songbird during the chaos of the ship being brought down. Following that, V and President Myers hide out and V can be sworn in as an agent of the NUSA. You also get a bit more about Johnny Silverhand’s backstory and his time in the army during all this exchange.
Following our escape of the crash and swearing in as an agent, we were shot back out to the open world. There we were given the goal of meeting special agent Solomon Reed portrayed by actor Idris Elba. Though, I got distracted by a side mission involving stealing a car. Once you meet him, the two of you return to meet with President Myers to discuss your next course of action.
The Phantom Liberty expansion is going to be fully available in game at some point during the base game and runs parallel to the main story. The missions will just be able to be chosen in the menu once you start the game, so you don’t need to complete the main story first or select the expansion at the main menu as a separate story like other types of expansions. Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty is set to release on Spetember 26, 2023.
