Games Done Quick has announced that their upcoming annual speedrunning stream, Summer Games Done Quick, will be changing from physical event to an online-only one due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The organizers made the announcement on their website, with a more than detailed outlook on what we can expect leading up to the event. Summer Games Done Quick was already delayed due to the pandemic earlier this year, but thankfully it looks like the event is still scheduled for August 16-23 with the new name of Summer Games Done Quick 2020 Online.
The event’s original dates were June 21-28 and was supposed to be held in Minnesota before the aforementioned date change. There was some speculation as to where Summer Games Done Quick would’ve been held, but those ideas are now obviously moot after this announcement. The event will now be broadcast straight from the Games Done Quick studio while the participating speedrunners will be playing the games from their own homes. The Summer Games Done Quick proceeds will all be given to the Doctors Without Borders, also known as Médecins Sans Frontières, who has been at the forefront of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Games Done Quick has already helped out with the pandemic effort as they held a speedrunning event this past April dubbed the Corona Relief Done Quick. All of the proceeds from that event went to the Direct Relief, whose mission is to assist those affected by emergencies and poor living situations. The weekend-only event raised roughly $400,000 for the charity, an impressive feat for just two days. With the upcoming Summer Games Done Quick 2020 Online event which has a lot more days planned for it, we expect the overall proceeds to much higher once it concludes.
Summer Games Done Quick 2020 Online will commence from August 16-23 and will start at 8:30 am PST and 11:30 am EST on their official Twitch channel.
