The MMO genre is mostly focused on RPGs and having fantasy settings. However, Klang Games is bringing a new type of MMO with their game SEED. The game is a MMO life sim, so think The Sims but fully multiplayer with every character being controlled by a real player. It sounds like an intense commitment, but it actually sounds like it works quite well. At Summer Game Fest, we got to see the developers play the game and learned a ton about it.
There are 100 cities currently in SEED, and everything from the real estate market to the government is player controlled. Governments and those in charge are all voted on by the players and can even be taken down if their approval goes too far down. You can even ship things between cities, and, next month, even players will be able to run their own shipping companies. Cities are expanded by the players using a grid system that can then be developed into multiple plots for multiple different types of buildings. Building new locations isn’t immediate either as depending on the size and type of building it can take a while to complete. Hospitals and their related mechanics are being added at some point this summer for even more things to do.
The developers also stressed character autonomy in the game. Once your Seedling is in the game, they can have a full life even without you present. They’re life still goes on even if you aren’t playing. That doesn’t mean your character will having a nice fulling and long life though. If you just have a city with a few tents and no food or water, then your Seedling will most likely die promptly. However, if your Seedling lives in a nice city with plenty of food and water with a job to earn money, then they can live happily even if you never come back to the game.
SEED is doing something few MMOs do, and, in one of the most competitive spaces, being so different is a huge plus to finding success. SEED enters early access for PC next month on July 21, 2026.
