There are a few developers who make absolutely off the wall types of games. Messhof is one such studio. Best known for the Niddhog games, the indie developer unveiled their next game during the Summer Game Fest Day of the Devs showcase. Titled, Blood Dungeon, this game is as weird and wacky as you’d expect from the studio. At Summer Game Fest, we got to go hands on with the game, and had a blast with the all the zaniness and enemies abound.
Blood Dungeon is a roguelike survival platformer. From what we played, we didn’t see any story or level progression. You just go to one of the game’s many dungeons and do your best to survive constant waves of enemies that get progressively harder. You are able to climb on any from walls to floors to ceilings as long as a way isn’t blocked off by needing a key or something. You must survive ten waves of enemies while bouncing all around the dungeon and upgrading yourself using the fallen enemies’ blood to level up. Throughout the waves, minibosses may appear such as a bone snake. Then, the final wave culminates in a bigger boss fight with one of the game’s many bosses including a giant skull the vomits everywhere.
The game features a slew of nine wacky characters to choose from to take into the dungeon. From a fully nude wacky barbarian with a giant sword to the Gun Man, what could his weapon be?, to even the hypnotist that farts out a cloud of damage dealing gas at enemies. It’s up to you to figure out with character you like best. Though, you are upgrading so fast in the game that you get tons of new weapons and abilities constantly to take on all the enemies. Even on earlier waves, it is extremely easy to get overrun so you must handle your upgrades and movements to survive longer.
Blood Dungeon is set to release at some point this summer.
