Subnautica 2 Studio Refutes Publisher’s Claim That It Will Release in 2024 and Have Live Service Elements

Unknown Worlds, the studio behind Subnautica, have responded to publisher Krafton’s earnings report, which claims that the game’s sequel will release in 2024 and have live service elements.

Krafton, who acquired Unknown Worlds in 2021, released their 4Q23 & FY2023 earnings report on Feb. 8, which features slide for upcoming 2024 titles. Despite being set for 2025 in a previous earnings report, Subnautica 2 is listed among the releases.

The slide also describes the game as having a co-op mode for up to four players, a feature not present in the first game. It also mentions a “Game-as-a-Service model for enhanced replayability,” which many took to mean that the game would be multiplayer-focused with live service elements like subscriptions or a battle pass.

Unknown Worlds was quick to respond with a blog post, clarifying some of the claims made in the report. The post starts by addressing the release date, stating that Early Access is not planned for release this year, though more information will be released about the game.

They also discussed the comments about the potential for a live service, stating “in reference to ‘Games-as-a-Service,’ we simply plan to continually update the game for many years to come, just like the previous two Subnautica games. Think our Early Access update model, expanded. No season passes. No battle passes. No subscription.”

Finally, they confirmed the multiplayer claims, but stressed that it would not be the only way to play the game. “The game is not multiplayer-focused,” the post said. “Co-op will be an entirely optional way to play the game. You’ll be able to enjoy the game as a single-player.”

These clarifications likely come as a relief for fans of Subnautica, as games that rely on a live service model like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League have recently faced criticism for those elements. For now, they’ll just have to wait for more news from the team. “We’re so excited to show you what we’ve been working on and hope that you love it as much as we do,” the post finishes.
