The video game industry in 2023 had a lot of stories, some of them the stories of massive successes, others not so much. One of the biggest games to, unfortunately, fall in the latter category was Redfall by Arkane Studios. Plagued with live service, numerous bugs, gameplay locked under 60 FPS on consoles, and with gameplay many would deem generic at best following a very troubled development to say the least, and Redfall was one of the biggest video game letdowns of 2023. Despite this, it seems that one of Redfall’s co-developers, Studio Gobo, is looking not to let the game’s failure weigh them down moving forward as reported by Gamesual.
It should be noted that Studio Gobo is not only one of the forces behind Redfall, but they also worked on Hogwarts Legacy as well. Hogwarts Legacy is the best-selling game of 2023 and one of the biggest success stories of the year, contrast this with Redfall’s reputation and you’ve got quite the swingy reputation among the gaming crowd. In fact, many who hear this will probably be scratching their heads about how to feel about this in general, since the two biggest games they’ve worked on in the past year might as well be on opposite ends of every possible critical spectrum you could put them on.
But the games industry moves ever forward, and as discovered by Gamesual, several job openings have recently opened in Studio Gobo, including Senior Environment Artist and Lead Designer, and it looks like they’re going to be working on a AAA story-based game on Unreal Engine 5.
As stated before, gaming fans will hear this news and likely lament the state of the industry, while others will hear this and feel elated that this group is finding more work. As stated, their resume holds water on both ends at this point, but as anyone with a love for this industry, the hope is that Studio Gobo and their recent hires produce something that can truly follow up their success with Hogwarts Legacy, rather than going down Redfall’s road.
