A relatively recent phenomenon in the gaming community, and one that has fans divided is the yellow paint splatter. Common in games with realistic art styles to distinguish items in the world of the game that can be interacted with. One upcoming indie horror game Still Wakes the Deep has already provided an option for those against the splatter markers. In an update that will be available some time post launch, the game will introduce a toggleable yellow marker feature.
The feature’s options are On or Reduced. Reduced will remove the splatter identifiers but some yellow will remain, namely ladders, valves, and other components of an oil rig that might actually be yellow. Considering that the main argument against the yellow markers is that they break up the scenery and immersion, the remaining yellow in the game makes sense. The opposing argument is that the yellow makes the game readable to its player. In environments where the ability to interact with an object or ledge might be unclear, it can be nice to know what the player has to work with. Luckily Still Wakes the Deep is here to give both sides an option that best fits their wants. Either way, a version for everyone will exist.
Still Wakes the Deep is out now, and is ten percent off on Steam. Released on June 18th, the game follows an oil rig worker off the coast of Scotland in 1975 when tragedy strikes. The player is forced to navigate a collapsing oil rig while trying to locate other members of the crew and keep themselves safe from some unknown threat. So far reviews seem to be very positive, with the games short six hour runtime making it a relatively quick experience. As you brave the oil rig, beware that which might be lurking beneath the waves.
