Among the mutant characters introduced as part of Marvel’s X-men team, Wolverine has one of the richest histories and popular stories to draw inspiration from. In today’s State of Play presentation, the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine revealed that it is more than willing to tap into the character’s history in search of allies and enemies to build its story. While the previous showcases revealed more gameplay and action sequences, the latest trailer focuses on the characters that Logan will meet on his mission and the impact they will have on him.
After a short clash with a ninja and an enemy with high-tech gauntlets, the trailer acquaints the audience with Wolverine’s most iconic foe, Sabretooth. He lectures Logan for his decision to run away and letting the events of the game get worse. The next enemy introduced in Bolivar Trask, an anti-mutant scientist who is revealed to have developed a new kind of sentinel capable of detecting mutant genes. The enemies range from human-sized ranged enemies to massive robots that need to be climbed on to defeat. Finally, the trailer introduces Omega Red, who fights Wolverine by trapping and throwing him around, and Deathstrike, who looks to be standing alongside Wolverine during the battle.
Even with the sentinel threat taking center stage in the trailer, new allies also get an appearance. Jean Grey returns following her reveal in an earlier trailer, showing off more of her telekinetic abilities such as moving objects and creating forcefields. The usually villainous mutant Mystique is also shown to help in some scenes out of concern for the growing danger of Bolivar Trask’s new sentinels and promise to wipe out the X-Gene.
Marvel’s Wolverine looks to tell a familiar tale both personal to Logan and related to the plight of the mutants overall while adding its own spin on certain elements. The game is set to release on September 15th,
