The first State of Play this year from PlayStation featured new games coming to PS VR2, looks at upcoming third-party titles coming to PlayStation 5, and an extended look at Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League from Rocksteady. So far, PlayStation hasn’t talked much about what we can expect this year but today’s State of Play featured several release dates for games that are set to be released in 2023. Below is a rundown of what was revealed during today’s State of Play.
With the launch of PS VR2 now behind us, PlayStation has revealed some of the games we can expect to see on the new platform this year. The Foglands is an atmospheric sci-fi western roguelike where players fight monsters, scavenge loot, and try to make it back before the fog consumes all. In Green Hell VR, players assume the role of Jake Higgins, a famous anthropologist who finds himself lost in the Amazon jungle. Surrounded by various dangers and equipped only with his watch, backpack and handy survival guide, he must endure and make it back to civilization. Synapse combines brutal firepower, expressive 1:1 telekinesis, and an iconic art style to create the next generation of immersive VR action from nDreams, creators of the VR title Fracked. Journey to Foundation is based off the groundbreaking Foundation book series written by Issac Asimov. Players embark on clandestine mission as Agent Ward, a spy sent to the edge of the Galatic Empire to infiltrate a group of deserters… only to uncover a dire truth that could change the course of history. Before Your Eyes is set to release on PS VR2 next month on March 10. The game tells the story of a soul’s journey into the afterlife using a new an innovative form of interaction – blinking.
A launch trailer for Destiny 2: Lightfall was released. The beginning of the end for Destiny’s Light and Darkness saga is set to launch next week on February 28. Tchia is an open-world sandbox adventure inspired by New Caledonia, the homeland of developer Awaceb. The game’s set to launch next month on March 21 and will launch into PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium so members of those PS Plus tiers will be able to try the game on Day 1. A gameplay trailer was released for Humanity. The whole concept of the game is to guide lost people in series of trials to try and steer them into the light. A new trailer highlighting some of the different gameplay that’s available in Goodbye Volcano High was released. The game is set to launch on PS5 and PS4 on June 15, 2023. In celebration of Naruto’s 20th anniversary anime debut, the next game in the Ultimate Ninja Storm series was announced. Naruto X Boruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections combines and re-edits scenes from the four Ultimate Ninja Storm games into one package. It features the largest roster in the series and will have a new original game story.
Baldur’s Gate III will launch on PS5 on August 31. The new trailer also introduced one of three main antagonists that players will encounter, General Ketheric Thorm. He will be voiced by JK Simmons. Wayfinder is a character-based, online action-RPG that takes place in a shared online world called Evenor. During today’s State of Play, it was revealed that the game is going into Early Access exclusively on PS5 and PS4. Early Access is set to begin in May 2023. Players who wish to give it a try can sign up for the next beta playtest starting on February 28, 2023 on the official Wayfinder website. The final Closed beta is set for March.
Capcom showcased new trailers for Street Fighter 6 and Resident Evil 4. Fan favorites Zangief and Cammy and newcomer Lily round out Street Fighter 6’s 18-character launch roster. The new trailer for Resident Evil 4 features looks at some of the game’s action-packed encounters with never before seen sequences and the iconic confrontation between Leon and Krauser. The Mercenaries game mode will be coming to Resident Evil 4. Lastly, Capcom announced that a demo will be coming to both PS4 and PS5 in the near future. Resident Evil 4 launches on March 24, 2023.
The first look at gameplay was revealed for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The footage features a mission where the Suicide Squad has to fight against waves of Brianiac’s corrupted soldiers in order to take out a huge artillery gun in order to save Lex Luthor. Each member of the Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark will have a fluid combat system and traversal system unique to them. Developer Rocksteady also highlighted some of the features of the game including 1-to-4-player gameplay options, and skill trees for each character that can be played whenever you want; You’re not tied to one character, and some of the game’s RPG elements. Rocksteady also talked about the future which will include new playable characters, new weapons, and new missions. A battle pass will be available to purchase as well which only contains cosmetics.
