Developer Starbreeze announced their upcoming licensed Dungeons & Dragons game on their official Twitter/X account.
Starbreeze is set to both publish and develop the untitled game, which is currently going by the codename “Project Baxter,” in 2026 for all major platforms. The official statement on the Starbreeze website says the game will “carry the signature Starbreeze game cornerstones of co-operative multiplayer, lifetime commitment through a Games as a Service-model, community engagement and a larger than life experience.”
Starbreeze is no stranger to co-op multiplayer games, as they’re best known for the Payday series. Payday is a first-person co-op multiplayer shooter focusing on a team of small-time criminals who team up to pull off bigger and better heists. The most recent installment in the series, Payday 3 released on September 21, 2023 to a massive influx of players that wound up causing serious server issues. Still, the game managed to have an impressive 3.1 million players by October 2, 2023 after it was released on the Xbox Game Pass.
Though Paydays’s real-life setting is vastly different from the fantasy world of Dungeons & Dragons, both licenser Hasbro and Starbreeze employees are looking forward to help the project come to life.
Tobias Sjögren, CEO of Starbreeze shared his excitement in the announcement:
“It is hard to imagine a better pairing than Dungeons & Dragons and Starbreeze – both with their foundation in cooperative and community driven experiences, ‘play it your way’ and infinite replayability. When looking at prospective IPs for our future projects, Dungeons & Dragons was always at the top of our list and I’m incredibly happy to announce this license. I want to thank Wizards of the Coast for being such a great partner,”
Eugene Evans, SVP Digital Strategy and Licensing at Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, expressed similar sentiment:
“Our gaming brands, including Dungeons & Dragons, continue to attract great partners as we execute our plan to grow our digital games portfolio through licensing and development. Our collaboration with Starbreeze is a prime illustration of this strategy. Given their impressive games and passion for Dungeons & Dragons, we are confident that they will create an experience that will delight fans worldwide.”
Sjögren stated development of Project Baxter is in “full-swing,” and on track for its expected 2026 release date.
