Star Wars Squadron’s Developer Motive is Working on Several New Games

Star Wars Squadrons released only a week ago and has been applauded as one of the best games to leverage the Star Wars property. The arcade flight mechanics and the simple narrative revolving around a New Republic squadron facing off against an elite squadron from the Imperial Remnant forces has given fans of the property to rally behind in the absence of films and Star Wars Battlefront 2 has stopped releasing new updates. Despite its popularity, Electronic Arts are sticking to its statement that they are not adding any new additions to the game after its launch with the executives considering the game complete and self-contained. Squadrons were the first game for Motive to handle by themselves with only helping Criterion and Dice on the Battlefront 2 before. General Manager Patrick Klaus gave an update on what is next for the studio, “In addition to Star Wars: Squadrons, we’re also working on several unannounced projects. Innovation is tough, but it’s also exciting and energizing. “With our new mission, we’re trying a lot of things and testing many ideas which you can’t get attached to, as iteration and experimentation are healthy and a key to finding something great.”

Klaus continued,  “To empower players to create, experiment, live, and share their own unique stories. To reach this goal, we’re encouraging innovation and calculated risk-taking in our approach to game development. We put significant emphasis on creating a safe space through our practices and culture to offer our teams the freedom, autonomy, and time to innovate where it matters.”

With Squadrons being highly successful, often called a successor to the X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter games of the late 90s, it is likely that they will be handed more games under the Star Wars brand to develop, possibly a sequel to follow the craze behind Squadrons. Klaus’s statement does sound like they are being given room to experiment with different styles of games, possibly making a new IP for Motive to manage by themselves.

Griffin Gilman: Gaming may very well be half of my personality, so it is only natural that I write about them. The best genre is RPGs, while the best game is Nier Automata. That's not an opinion but a matter of facts.
