Sony did not hold back at all during their PlayStation Showcase. The company unleashed a number of new IPs, one of which got the gaming community talking immediately. Right off the bat, Sony dropped a bombshell that no one or very few were expecting. The company, as well as developer Aspyr Media, announced the grand return of one of the greatest RPGs in history, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Going by the name Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake, the all-time classic is being brought back for the PlayStation 5 and PC, with the former being a timed exclusive.
This is no Jedi mind trick!
We’re bringing STAR WARS: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake to PlayStation 5 as a console exclusive at launch and to PC in partnership with @PlayStation and @Lucasfilmgames!https://t.co/kDyB4RNN53 pic.twitter.com/rGXTs3cdXR

As we already mentioned, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake is being developed by Aspyr Media, who has actually worked on the franchise before. They were the main developers who ported both the original Knights of the Old Republic and its sequel Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords to Mac, Android, and iOS. In addition, they’ll be working directly with Lucasfilm Games on the Remaster. Lucasfilm Games is of course a division within Disney that acts as a licensor of multiple properties. They were formerly known as LucasArts, a development studio that spanned for more than 39 years.
Other than the amazing teaser trailer, not a whole lot of information was given out for this one. On a PlayStation blog post, Aspyr Media Lead Producer Ryan Treadwell states that the game will be a “console exclusive on PlayStation 5 at launch.” The extent of the exclusivity was not elaborated on, but it’s more than likely that Sony was able to negotiate a specific time frame in order to keep Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake on their home console for a good amount of time. It’s also worth noting that the game will also launch on PC, but the details on that are also unknown at this time.
This unfortunately is a bit of a sting for Xbox home console owners, especially considering Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic started on the original Xbox way back in 2003. It eventually made its way to PC as well, but for the majority of its lifetime, the franchise was considered a premier part of the Xbox. It’s also important to note that the original title was developed by none other than BioWare, and is often looked at as their first real big break on the home console market.
Hopefully, we’ll hear more on this as the year continues, but for now, we’re just happy to see the original, classic, outstanding RPG return. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is back, and we can’t wait to find out more.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake will launch as a PlayStation 5 console time exclusive and will also release on PC.
