Star Citizen‘s Twitch channel recently streamed an hour of gameplay from Squadron 42, the stand-alone single-player component to Star Citizen. The new footage of Squadron 42 included a partial tour of a huge flagship and offered a taste of first-person combat in the form of in-space dogfighting between vessels.
The segment features Mark Hamill as Old Man Colton, a main character throughout the game. Hamill is one of several high-profile actors to lend their voice and likeness to the project. This chunk of Squadron’s gameplay also contains Game of Thrones’ Liam Cunningham; meanwhile, Gillian Anderson, Andy Serkis, John-Rhys Davies and Gary Oldman have additionally been confirmed to play roles in the game.
Another version of the demo stream is available on YouTube, with commentary and annotations by Star Citizen director Chris Roberts, Technical Director of Content Sean Tracy, and Lead Writer Dave Haddock.
Squadron 42 promises a story-driven campaign within the Star Citizen universe, where players take the role of a rookie Navy combat pilot. The single-player game, which will release gradually in multiple chapters, will contain “a vibrant crew” and “a dynamic conversation and reputation system [allowing] you to define your character through your actions and interactions.” Squadron‘s gameplay involves “intense tactical battles” through a mixture of ground action and the spacefaring combat we see in the new video.
Squadron 42’s release has been repeatedly delayed since 2014 and does not yet have a release date, though according to its website an update on the game’s status is coming on January 25, 2018.
