It looks like Square Enix might be bringing back one of their classic tactical JRPGs. The company has filed a trademark in their native japan under the name Tactics Ogre: Reborn. The name is a rather large implication here, as it could suggest a reboot or remaster of sorts for one of the best JRPGs of the 1990s, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. However, all we know so far is just the name, and Square Enix will keep that information to themselves before they’re ready to unveil what they’re working on.
For those who don’t know, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together was a tactical JRPG that was developed by Quest Corporation and launched in 1995 for the SNES. At the time it was only available in Japan, but it was later brought to North America when it was ported to the PlayStation in 1998. The game was critically acclaimed, as it was in many ways one of the first of the tactical role-playing games to be successful on a mainstream level.
However, perhaps the most lasting aspect of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together is what followed soon after. Once the title was completed, some key developers departed Quest Corporation and joined video game powerhouse Square, which is known today as Square Enix. Together they created what many consider today to be the single greatest tactical JRPG of all time, Final Fantasy Tactics. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together would regain some relevancy in 2011 when the game was remade for the PlayStation Portable with some updated visuals and mechanics, but ever since the franchise has been fairly dormant.
Quite frankly, we’d welcome a brand new Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, but nothing is set in stone for this trademark. Hopefully, Square Enix lets the cat out of the bag sooner than later.
