Square Enix Announces Mobile AR Game Dragon Quest Walk, Also Prepping to Start Dragon Quest XII Development

During the recent Dragon Quest live stream, Square Enix revealed two major updates in regards to the future of the franchise. The biggest of these updates is that Square Enix plans to take the franchise into the augmented reality (AR) space. This is due to the company announcing a Pokémon GO-esque AR mobile game Dragon Quest Walk.

Dragon Quest Walk is being developed by Colopl, and is set to release at some point in 2019 in Japan. Unfortunately, there was no mention of the game releasing elsewhere. According to the Dragon Quest Walk official website, as translated by Gematsu, the game will have players “battle against various monsters, grow, prepare equipment, and even challenge formidable enemies.” It is also set to feature “a story that develops as you walk.” The game will also have quests that players can find at various landmarks throughout Japan. There will also be a room players can customize that players can decorate.

Since Pokémon GO took the world by storm in 2016, many companies have tried to replicate the success Niantic found with their game. Most recently, Mojang announced their AR game, Minecraft Earth, for release this summer. FourThirtyThree also released the licensed AR game Ghostbusters World back in October of last year. Thus, Square Enix is going to entering a very competitive gaming space.

The other major announcement to come out of the Dragon Quest live stream was the news that Square Enix is apparently already prepping for the development of the next mainline entry in the series, Dragon Quest XII. The series executive producer Yuu Miyake stated during the stream, “By the way, about Dragon Quest XII, which I’m sure is on everyone’s mind—Horii and I are currently making preparations on series developments that will connect to XII. I think it’s still too early, but we would like announce it in some form, so please wait a little while longer.”

With these two major updates, the future of the franchise looks great. Dragon Quest XII may be a ways off and Dragon Quest Walk is only slated to release in Japan this year, but Western audiences do have something from the franchise to look forward to in the immediate future. As Dragon Quest Builders 2 is set to release in North America next month.

Avid believer that video games present the best storytelling opportunities out of any media, and that needs to be conveyed. Former competitive Pokemon player. Attended university to study game development. Wouldn't be who I am today without games.
