Square Enix and Tokyo RPG Factory Release a Free Demo for Oninaki that Allows Saved Data to be Carried to the Full Game

Square Enix and Tokyo RPG Factory, the developers of I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear, have released a free demo for the studio’s upcoming RPG, Oninaki. For those that play the demo, it has been announced that saved data and progress from the demo will be able to be carried over to the full game once it releases.

In a post on the PlayStation Blog, the game’s director Atsushi Hashimoto and creative producer Takashi Tokita, one of the directors and writers of the Super Nintendo classic Chrono Trigger, described what players can expect from Oninaki. The game follows Kagachi who serves as a Watcher that ushers souls to their next life after they have died. However, in the world of Oninaki, reincarnation is real and thus these souls can return to the world of the living.

In Oninaki, everyone who dies can be reincarnated and have a new life, so the attitudes in the world towards death and grief are very different to our own. In fact, people shouldn’t grieve for the dead in Oninaki, as that emotion can stop souls from being reincarnated.

Kagachi’s story will follow his journey as a Watcher, and will intersect with “a mystery surrounding a girl called Linne and The Night Devil.” Kagachi also has the power to summon Deamons which are souls that will aid him in battle. There will be a variety of Deamons usable in the game with many different abilities such as the sword wielding Aisha or the spear user Zaav.

The demo for the game also features a Battle Mode. In this mode, players are given four different Deamons with different abilities to try out. This mode will allow for players to keep experiencing and get better at the game’s combat system and test out the different abilities that Deamons can have.

Oninaki will be released next month on August 22 for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC. You can check out the newest trailer released alongside the demo below:
