The FPS genre has seen many innovations since its creation, spawning some of the most long-lasting franchises and game styles the industry has ever seen. Occasionally, rather than push ahead, developers take a look back toward the favored games of the past for inspiration. This is the case for an FPS announced today titled Sprawl Zero, which takes cues from popular titles from the mid 2000s for its gameplay, visuals, and world. Developed by MAETH, the game seeks to capture the “golden age” of the genre while boasting modern technology to see the vision through.
The 2000s-era graphics are on full display from the opening shots of the announcement trailer. The grimy, industrial setting mixed with futuristic technology should be familiar to any gamers who can remember the classics. The atmosphere is further set by an ominous voice carrying out the instructions for the soldier about to land, inspiring them with mentions of their “divine purpose”. The trailer also shows off some of the unique gameplay features in Sprawl Zero, such as the ability to stop bullets in mid-air before launching them back at the attacker. The abilities are also shown to allow players to pick up objects to shield themselves and slow time for more precise reactions.
The game’s Steam store page recently came up as well, featuring more details about the upcoming FPS. The main character is named FIVE, who is on a mission to destroy a techno-religious organization. It also goes into detail about the enemy AI, designed to corner players and communicate to create tactical positions and firefights reminiscent of F.E.A.R. or Halo. The levels are also designed to encourage replay, featuring multiple paths for players to cross.
While many technological advancements render old iterations obsolete, games are able to access older styles to create brand new experiences that feel comfortable for young and old players. Sprawl Zero is set to release on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
