Last year at E3, Insomniac Games, the studio behind Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank and Sunset Overdrive, announced that they are working on their first licensed game, a Spider-Man game that will be exclusive to the PlayStation 4. According to GameSpot, Ryan Penagos, the vice president and executive editor of Marvel Digital Media, announced during a livestream that the as of yet untitled Spider-Man game will be out in 2017. Penagos was quoted as saying, “there’s even more on the horizon for 2017 like Spider-Man coming to PlayStation 4 and Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite coming to Xbox One, PS4 and PC.”
The newest Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming, is set to come out in theaters this July, causing many fans to speculate that the Spider-Man game will also come out this summer in an attempt to ride the coattails of what is likely to be a popular summer movie. Insomniac Games, however, has recently refuted any timeframe of the game’s release, whether it be this summer or this year.

The Spider-Man game is not tied to Spider-Man: Homecoming, nor will it follow the canonical story of any previous Spider-Man medium, but rather it will have its own original story conceived by Insomniac themselves. Along with a new costume design, the official game description states, “it’s Spider-Man unlike any you’ve played before.” The description goes on to say, “this is an experienced Peter Parker who’s more masterful at fighting big crime in New York City.” So it’s probably safe to assume that this won’t be an origin story.
