Space travel can always get a rise out of our curiosity, such as with 2001 Space Odyssey (1968), the Star War series (1977 to present), and Interstellar (2014). Space adventure game, Outer Wilds, with astronautical interactive game scenes harmonizing with magnificent symphony music, will offer a window for players to experience a surreal space adventure, traveling around planets and encountering potential unknown alien civilizations in the universe. Today, publisher Annapurna Interactive on Facebook announced that Mobius Digital Games’ Outer Wilds will be coming to Windows 10 and Xbox One later this year.
The world of Outer Wilds is set in the solar system where astronaut players are trapped in an endless time loop where they can make explorations every 20 minutes. Even though the solar system is gamified, the astronaut game mechanics are various, including controlling a spacecraft with takeoff and landing skills, encountering aliens, learning unknown space knowledge, and obtaining some unusual items. During the exploration of different planets, players will face different challenges such as flying through vicious tornadoes or trying to communicate with aliens with hopes of diplomacy. Along with facing these challenges in the game, players will gradually be more and more proficient in their spacecraft abilities and will eventually become an experienced astronaut. Countless events are continuously happening in the space, no matter whether we witness it or not.
Space is not just a wonderland; it is also potentially dangerous. What’s the secret of the dark planet with a sense of ominousness? Who built the alien relics on the moon? How can we stop the endless time loop? The answer is waiting for you in Outer Wilds.
Works published by Annapurna Interactive are promised to have high aesthetic performance in the story and visual arts department. For many years, Annapurna Pictures (the parent company of Annapurna Interactive) has been acclaimed with a good reputation for producing many films with good stories and visuals, such as the academy award winning film Her (2013) by Spike Jones, which tells a sci-fi romance between a human and his AI. Annapurna Interactive is looking to make a huge entrance into the game industry by hiring many successful game designers and publishing their unique works. They have already published Florence (2018), which was designed by Ken Wong, who is known as the chief designer of Monument Valley (2014), and the creative director, Jenova Chen, the designer of Journey (2012). All in all, Outer Wilds is looking more than promising with such creative ties and roots within the entertainment industry.
