State of Play Games has released their newest adventure game to the Apple Arcade, South of the Circle. The player capers through the main story as a man named Peter during the Cold War. Peter becomes stranded in the frozen badlands of Antarctica when his plane crashes unexpectedly. Peter must tread across miles of uncharted ice fields, ghost towns, and abandoned outposts to reach a point of contact for a rescue team to find him; all the while surviving what the arctic wasteland has to throw at him.
State of Play Games used a midcentury screen printing-inspired aesthetic which gives the game a beautiful artistic look that has not been used in many games. South of the Circle is set during the Cold War era in the 1960s. It also features a love story between Peter and his homebound love interest Clara, which will trickle into the story as Peter remembers her and other events that happened prior to his crash to put off his seemingly unending loneliness.
State of Play says South of the Circle uses full motion capture for realism with its stunning graphics. State of Play is also using a host of seasoned individuals to play as actors for the game including Michael Fox, Anton Lesser, Adrian Rawlins, Richard Goulding, Gwilym Lee, and Olivia Vinall.
The game is meant to give the player a sense of self-reflection as Peter will go through it in the game. South of the Circle is going to be more realistic than some games that portray an individual as a hero who pushes forward through any loss. Peter will act like anyone would if they were trapped in an unforgiving environment, and the real emotions that will be shown may surprise the players says the game’s designer Luke Whittaker. The way the game is set and the story that it is likely to be witnessed by players may become a fan favorite in time.
