Soundfall: The Upcoming Musical Dungeon Crawler

Rhythm games are a staple in the video game genre. However, few others dare to blend into others like the upcoming indie game: Soundfall.

Indie dungeon crawlers have been known for the isometric rogue-like style akin to Binding of Isaac, but Soundfall takes the genre a step further. Currently what the game features is a colorful action-adventure, similar to Enter the Gungeon, but with the rhythm-based mechanics of Crypt of the Necrodancer. The site officially claims:

Soundfall is an upbeat action/adventure game with music at its core. Embark on a magnificent journey of friendship and discovery. Share in the adventure of a lifetime as you delve into forbidden dungeons, explore fantastic landscapes, and uncover the awesome power of music.

In the game, you play as Melody, an audiophile transported into another world. In the trailer, you can see she bears sci-fi-esque armor inspired by others in the musical sci-fi genre and aesthetic.

Gameplay-wise, it is a twin-stick shooter with rhythm elements, but from what is shown, the game bears a colorful isometric 3D world stunningly rendered in the Unreal Engine. The music from the trailer depicts a colorful, vibrant and upbeat soundtrack. In the background and surrounding environment, the game focuses on matching the beats of the gameplay, from the bouncing plants, to obstacles, to enemies.

The game is currently in development by Drastic Games. The team is a small studio startup, with members from Epic Games (Fortnite, Gears of War, Unreal Tournament). Their goal to Soundfall is to “deliver players a binary fueled typhoon of entertainment, with enough pixel powered lightning in a bottle to shock even the most zealous Tesla enthusiast.”

Everything shown thus far is a fresh breath to the dungeon crawler genre. Like many others players are expected to gather and upgrade gear, but there are plenty of other playable characters, co-op capability, all in a procedurally generated world.

The game is still currently in development but the process can be followed along at its official website.

Soundfall will be playable at PAX West, EGX, and PAX Australia later this year.
