Sony PlayStation Faces Lawsuit Alleging Gender Discrimination

Sony PlayStation has been handed a lawsuit that was filed in California earlier this week. Initially reported by Axios, the lawsuit alleges that a former IT  Security Analyst, Emma Majo, was the victim of gender discrimination as well as wrongful termination from her employment. The lawsuit also states that Majo is looking to establish a class action lawsuit and hopes to represent other women that have faced gender discrimination while under the employ of Sony PlayStation. The wording on the lawsuit claims that “Sony tolerates and cultivates a work environment that discriminates against female employees.”

Further reading on the lawsuit explains Majo’s experience during her employment at Sony, which was from 2015 to 2021. Majo claims that she was denied any sort of promotion due to her continuous inquiry on how to move up the ladder in her workplace. Majo also claims that she overheard higher management “make gender-biased comments about female workers.” The suit claims that Majo submitted a signed statement to Sony which addressed the gender discrimination. The suit also states that she was fired soon after this, which was allegedly due to the closure of a department that she didn’t belong to. Majo instead believes that she was wrongfully terminated due to her bringing up the alleged gender discrimination. The official lawsuit is 40 pages long and can be found here.

This new lawsuit comes less than a week after PlayStation’s CEO Jim Ryan, Xbox Head Phil Spencer, and Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser all reacted to the revelation of Bobby Kotick’s knowledge, and the board of directors recent actions of the Activision Blizzard allegations scandal that shocked the video game industry this past Summer. With Sony PlayStation themselves is looking at a potentially similar situation, we’re left to wonder just what will come of this new lawsuit and how the company will respond.
