Sony Group and Lego Each Commit $1 Billion in Epic Games to Develop a Metaverse

Metaverse gaming has become very popular across the country as more virtual reality consoles and games are released. In order to join this race, both the Sony Group and Lego have each committed an additional $1 billion to develop their own metaverse. These investments will be put into Epic Games, the same studio that developed the hit game Fortnite

Neither company’s investment comes as a surprise due to each of their histories. Sony has a history of investing in Epic Games since they have already spent over $450 million on the company. Similarly, Epic Games and Lego recently announced plans to create new virtual reality world. The world will be family-friendly and is expected to target children.

Tim Sweeney, the Epic Games CEO, discussed the investments by both Sony and Lego. He said that Epic is looking for partners who “share our vision” for the “future of entertainment,” and that both Sony and Lego match up with their values. Sweeney continued this discussion when he said, “This investment will accelerate our work to build the metaverse and create spaces where players can have fun with friends, brands can build creative and immersive experiences and creators can build a community and thrive.”

Kenichiro Yoshida, the Sony Group CEO, also discussed the company’s investment into Epic Games. He said, “We are thrilled to invest in Epic to deepen our relationship in the metaverse field, a space where creators and users share their time. We are also confident that Epic’s expertise, including their powerful game engine, combined with Sony’s technologies, will accelerate our various efforts such as the development of new digital fan experiences in sports and our virtual production initiatives.”

The investments by the Sony Group and Lego show how rapidly the world of gaming will be changing. Companies are investing more into the metaverse and will likely begin to change the way gaming is for the future!
