PlayStation fans who enjoy collecting game discs have received some difficult news today, as Sony announced that they will be halting all disc production starting in January of 2028. In post made on the official PlayStation blog, Sid Shuman, the Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, goes into detail on the decision. As of the previously mentioned date, any new games that release will either release on the Playstation store or retailers in exclusively digital form. This decision was made due to changes in consumer preference, according to Sony. This decision will not have any effect on games that release before January of 2028, so if players want to still collect as many physical copies of games as they can, they have some time to do so.
This news also sets some potential expectations for the eventual release of the PlayStation 6. Since Playstation is ceasing production of physical discs for games in 2028, then the PS6 may be the first PlayStation console (with the exception of the PS5 Digital Edition) to not have a disc drive for physical games. There’s not telling for certain whether or not this will be the case, but it’s certainly become possible for the future of not just the PS6, but PlayStation’s future consoles as a whole.
PlayStation’s discontinuation of physical discs has brought up many questions and concerns for gamers as a whole. Many are wondering what precedent Sony’s decision may set for the game market altogether. Since Rockstar confirmed that GTA VI will not be selling physical discs, it seems that there’s a trend that may begin snowballing through the gaming industry, involving a collective migration from physical to digital media. PlayStation may be the beginning of a wave of companies announcing the same news. While nothing is for certain, gamers should remain alert of similar news, in case case other companies announce the same thing for themselves.
