Despite relative success with recent titles such as Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations, Team Sonic have struggled to modernise the blue hedge dweller and develop the character beyond his side scrolling origins. Sonic Lost Worlds for the Nintendo 3DS, while familiar in appearance, displays a spiritual departure from previous games, expressed in its unconventional level design. Sonic Lost Worlds takes a page from the Super Mario Galaxy series and adopts a more abstract approach to platforming, where gravity and realism give way to pure level design. While there will undoubtedly be comparisons between this game and Galaxy, Team Sonic have the opportunity to embrace the concept of level design unhindered by reality and take this game to a place that would only makes sense in video games. Maybe we can finally get away from the crappy story lines and all those sad tagged on characters and Sonic clones that have built up over the years.
