Sonic Frontiers may have only been available for seven months thus far but it’s already doing some serious numbers for Sega. The company recently hosted special conference in regards to their official acquisition for mobile game developer Rovio, and at some point during the presentation, Sonic Frontier’s statistics are brought up. According to the company, the title has now sold more than 3.5 million units since it launched back in November, a full 500,000 jump from their last sales report just this past March. That makes Sonic Frontiers the highest selling 3D Sonic title of all time, usurping the previous title holder, 2003’s Sonic Heroes.
To put this is in a much bigger perspective, Sonic Heroes, which launched back in 2003, didn’t reach those numbers until late 2007, when it sold roughly 3.41 million units. That’s more than four years since it released, and more than fours years for it to reach those numbers. Sonic Frontiers on the other hand has been out for a mere seven months, and trounced those statistics in what appears to be a fairly easy fashion. The time gap between both titles hitting those milestones is almost unprecedented, and shows that the Sonic fan base was ready for a return to a true open 3D world in the franchise, despite some really excellent 2D releases in recent years.
Sega isn’t done with the title by a long shot either. Including quality of life updates here and there, the company is also working on releasing some free DLC updates later this year. The first batch of content dropped this past March, while the second wave could potentially be release sometime in June which is the franchises 32nd Anniversary. The third DLC will have a new story arc as well as a new character for players to utilize, expanding the title’s playability even further. If these pieces of content continue to release, and with the sales numbers continuing to rise throughout the year, then there’s a high possibility that the title’s overall units shipped statistic will be exponentially higher be the end of 2023.
Sonic Frontiers is available now for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/Series S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
